Halloween in Transylvania: Visiting Dracula’s Castle in Romania

I’ve celebrated Halloween in plenty of places back home in the US — from haunted houses in New Orleans to costume parades in New York. But last year, I wanted something different. Something bigger. Something spookier. So I booked a flight to Romania and spent Halloween night at the one place every horror fan dreams of: Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania.

The Road to Transylvania

Most US travelers arrive in Bucharest, Romania’s capital. From there, you can:

  • Take a train → around 3–4 hours to Brașov (the nearest city).
  • Rent a car → more flexible, but the mountain roads are twisty.
  • Book a tour shuttle → many Halloween packages include round-trip transport to Bran Castle.

The journey itself feels like a movie. Rolling hills, misty forests, tiny villages — by the time the castle comes into view, you’ll swear you’ve stepped inside a Gothic novel.

Halloween Night at Dracula’s Castle

Halloween night at Bran Castle feels like stepping straight into a Gothic dream. The 14th-century fortress glows under candlelight and flickering torches, while hundreds of people dressed as everything from glamorous vampires to eerie ghouls shift through its stone halls. As you move from room to room, guides whisper haunted tales of Vlad the Impaler and the Dracula legend, their voices echoing against the ancient walls. Outside in the courtyard, a DJ sets the rhythm and costumed travelers dance beneath the looming towers, laughter mixing with the beat. The air is sharp and cold, warmed only by cups of steaming mulled wine and trays of local treats passed around. Somewhere in the castle’s darker corners, narrow stairways twist into haunted passageways that make you constantly glance over your shoulder, half-convinced someone is following you. Then, just as midnight strikes, the sky above the Carpathian Mountains explodes with fireworks, painting the castle in bursts of red and gold. For a brief moment, you’re caught between history and fantasy, not quite sure which one feels more real.

Practical Tips for US Travelers

Getting There from the US

  • Flight options: Major airlines like Delta, United, and Lufthansa fly from US cities (NYC, Chicago, LAX) to Bucharest (OTP). Prices in October range from $600–$850 round-trip if booked early.
  • Travel time: Around 9–11 hours with a layover in Europe.

Tickets & Booking

  • General entry to Bran Castle is about $12–15.
  • Special Halloween events/tours are usually $40–$70 per person.
  • Book early — tickets often sell out weeks before October 31.

Where to Stay

  • Brașov (30 min away): Beautiful medieval city with plenty of hotels & restaurants. Great base for exploring Transylvania.
    • Mid-range: Casa Wagner Brașov ($70/night)
    • Budget: JugendStube Hostel ($20/night dorms)
  • Bran village (near the castle): Perfect if you want to be right next door.
    • Cozy B&Bs from $50–80/night with mountain views.

What to Pack

  • Warm layers: October nights get chilly (40–50°F).
  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll walk a lot, including uneven castle stairs.
  • A costume: Not required, but trust me, it makes the night way more fun.

Beyond the Castle: Exploring Transylvania

Don’t just stop at Bran Castle — the region is full of gems:

  • Brașov → cobblestone streets, Black Church, and lively squares.
  • Sighișoara → Vlad the Impaler’s actual birthplace (UNESCO town).
  • Carpathian Mountains → hiking trails and misty scenery straight out of a horror film.

And don’t miss trying:

  • Sarmale (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat & rice).
  • Țuică (traditional plum brandy — warms you up fast!).
